Weird noise when braking

This is kind of hard to explain...but after driving for awhile without braking at all, if I lightly tap on the breaks I hear a clicking kind of noise from underneath the Runner...it doesn't happen everytime, only after I haven't used the brakes in a while; and it typically doesnt happen if I just slam on the brakes, only if I lightly press on them.

It's really weird, gonna be pretty hard to diagnose.

Just thought I would see if you guys had ever had this problem.

Not trying to sound like a smarty pant, but maybe your keys in the ignition? I had the same thing on my own and when I held the key chain the sound went away.

No, its a very mechanical type sound and I don't hear it with the windows up, well, I do but...I can just tell its coming from underneath the rig. Not sure what it would be.

I know on my moms Honda Pilot, those are supposed to make noise, but this hasn't done it the whole time so...its something new. I just had the brakes worked on not too long ago, about 2-3 weeks...had the front pads replaced then went back about 4 days later and had the rotors resurfaced and cleaned and all that jazz...maybe they did something to it then.

I would definitely go back and check on the brakes. I can't think of anything on the top of my head of what it could be, but you may luck up and find something when you look.

well, here's my .02

your brakes are more worn down than they used to be...
new brake pads rub against the rotor ALL of the time...
with slightly worn brake pads, there is less friction 'holding the pad in place'
therefore, when driving for a while without using your brakes, the pads are all of the towards the bottom of the caliper 'socket'... where the pad rests.
when you hit the brakes, there is just enough movement to pull the pad to the top of the caliper... and that is metal/metal, so there might be a click noise.

eh, sounds feasable, but that's pulled right out of my ass haha

That sounds like an ideal case but you have to remember *with the exception of Ford's newer trucks with the air gaps* the brake pads are always in contact with the rotors new or old pads. Also he just stated he had new pads put on so that eliminates that possibility.

You do have a point there. I've found in my old job that non OEM brake pads often times like to squeal a lot even with the anti-squeal paint and shims. I've not seen/heard of any problems with a clicking sound, but it could happen I guess.

Fink, any update on this? This recently started happening to my truck. Its EVERY time i step on the brake pedal. If you roll down the window its very noticeable. I had new OEM pads put in last year if that helps. Thanks in advance guys!

I would say sheared caliper pins allowing caliper float, happened on an old Mx6 racecar we ran with...but with Toy's brakes being COMPLETELY different, they dont have the same stresses on the caliper slide ins...so, you got me.

I used to get this clicking noise when I changed brakes/rotors. I just took the brakes back off and reversed calipers and it's gone. I'm sure this noise is coming from the front brakes if anything. Hope this helps

I had this because the pads had a small amout of play in them. The click was from the pad clanking around. I had to have them shimmed.

No update on this, had my rig worked on recently and nobody noticed anything and quite honestly it hasn't caught my attention much recently either...granted it's getting cold so I don't have my windows down as much as before.

The only parts I put on my rig are OEM with the exception of the ISR mod and all that...so the brakes are all OEM. I'm assuming if it was a problem my guy at the shop would have told me about it.

If it progresses I'll have them tear em apart and look at em.

Brakes are working great though so no worries there.
