The driver's door jamb states gross vehicle weight and not curb weight which just under 4000lbs for a 3rd gen 4wd.

Gross vehicle weight is the curb weight plus the max capacity weight of passengers and cargo which is about 5200lbs and far from the curb weight so don't ever go by the door jamb.

Curb weight is in the specs section of the owners manual if you have one

The brochure I have for the '99 4Runners states it's at 3975 w/auto tranny and I think the '99+ are slightly heavier.

Curb weight is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (e.g. motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo.

My 98 SR5 is about 3850 when stock. LTDs are a bit heavier. Your 97 should weigh about the same as the 98. I think the 5spd trucks are 50lbs lighter or so, too.

fixya.com shows a weight of 3565 lbs but the web site seems like a big car ad- i sent Toyota an email asking them but based on past experience, they will just refer me to the dealer. which would be a waste.............

3500lbs? That's even less than what a Tacoma weighs.

All 3rd gens range from 3800-4000lbs but Toyota offically states them right in the 3900 range for 4wd models.
