Just looking for a little service advice for my newly acquired 96 tacoma. My biggest challenge is getting some straight and honest info on the water pump. My mechanic tells me the pump he's planning to put in along with the belts, pulleys, etc. are oem new from toyota. Everyone I've asked has said to stay away from "rebuilt" parts for this vehicle. I've checked with a few toyota dealers about what they've got and all have said rebuilt. Two questions: Does toyota make or does anyone even stock a new oem tacoma water pump. Any problems with toyota's rebuilt pumps if this is all they stock now? I've asked the mechanic a few times about this. Is there a stamp or id or something to identify a part that's rebuilt, once it's out of the box. Is a rebuilt oem toyota pump better than a new bosch or NAPA pump, if this becomes my only option

It' a 3.4 with an extended cab.

 

Use OEM Toyota parts. Period.

Just bought some of the same parts for a 4Runner. Dealer parts will be new, not rebuilt.

Yes, the belts, pulleys, and maybe the tensioner for the timing, plus the thermostat, radiator and heater hoses, ps, ac & alt belt. I think all are original and the ps belt and other are starting to get small hairline cracks. It's got 122,000 miles. Broke in and low miles but needs a little TLC to keep it fresh.

 

ya id just replace it all by the sounds of it ... i did mine awhile ago and it runs like new

 

yes definatly get the tensioner and 2 timing belt idler pulleys/bearings I took mine all apart last week and found out they were gone, definatly worth replacing it all while youre in there.

 

Autozone has a lifetime warranty on their durlast New water pumps...

Thanks everyone for the info. Found an OEM online toyota dealership for the parts, gave me a little break on shipping. Not sure why the first dealership said I couldn't get a new water pump only a remanufactured.

I looked at the ebay link as well as the rockauto link. I needed the belts as well and wanted them oem too. I may have paid a little more, but the really cheap price made me think a little; like is the housing missing on the pump. I've see a lot of cheap ones but some don't include the housing. I'm tired of the researching and want to get Git-R-Done. Thanks again for showing me some options of whats available and the information you know about it.

 

+1 on OEM parts for the 3.4; yet Bando is a darn good belt, even the OEM belts have the Bando belt part number stamped on them as a reference....

The timing belt and waterpump is a big job to do and an expensive one if you have it done.

Why in the world would you try to save a few bucks on non-Toyota parts?
