just about...

up to the axles is a good limit. At this point, water will try to find ways into axles, brakes, etc. If you have any seals that leak fluid, water will be entering there first.

How deep are you talking? If you've got long but not too deep of a hole, go as slow as you can to avoid drowning anything. Good luck!

You can go a bit higher than the axles. The proper technique is to go just fast enough to create a bow wave in front of the truck to minimize the amount of water that goes into the engine compartment and most importantly the intake. Go to fast and the water will crash over and go into the intake. If the water is shallow enough there is no too slow but at the limit you can go slightly deeper if you can go a bit faster and set up a wave.

Of course be careful you know exactly how deep the water is. Get out and wade if you're not sure if there might be a big hole that'll suck the truck down! Use a stick to probe for depth (so you don't go into the hole either!!).

If you plan to do alot of swimming with your 4runner, I recommend doing the rear breather diff mod It's easy to do and it'll move the rear diff breather up to a higher location thus giving you the ability to swim deeper.

Then the limitation will be the lowest point for all breathers and your intake (which ever one is lower).

I think this should do it right? (someone chime in please!)

What about auto tranny vents? I know GM has an atmospheric vent on the housing, usually on top somewhere. Not sure on the Yota's, this is my first auto, and I haven't even crawled under there to check it out yet!

Really, this is the only thing a Jeep has an advantage on. Jeep runs lines all the way up to the engine compartment with little caps at the ends. Too bad they suck water into the intakes with reckless abandon!

I had to clean out my pants after this run, but I'd try and avoid water like that if possible....

^^^^^^ Perfect illustration of the bow wave.

If you do the snorkel mod where you run the intake back to the rear of the Engine compartment you can go deeper than that. My momma used to have an Isuzu Amigo that I wheeled the crap out of. It had the intake in the rear of the compartment and I went through stuff w/ the water washing onto the front of the hood w/ no problems!

Pulled out all sorts of drowned Jeeps w/ it to! LOL.

Dude, are you crazy? All that power and stereo equipment, if you went any deeper you would kill every living thing in a 100 yard radius!

I've been in water (while wheelin') that was deep enough to need the use of my windshield wipers.
One hole that I went through a few years back was deep enough that the whole hood was submerged and the water was splashing about 2 inches up on my windshield. Talk about your pucker factor. You could hear all kinds of gurgling noises under my hood, as well as the gurgling of the exhaust out back.. Needless to say, I won't be trying that again..

I wish that i had a picture of that murky water hole.. It would look like the pic that Bumpin' Yota posted, only my hood was under water for a distance of 10 feet of so.. Also, I didn't bonzai into this hole or push a giant wave of water either. I just eased into it and crept through it at a steady pace...

Obtw, my truck is stock with no lift, no Safari snorkel and only P265 tires (roughly 31.5 inches tall)..

*edit* I went out and measured the distance from the ground to the base of my windshield. I came up with approx. 49 inches, as well as the height of the front of my hood (off level ground) and came up with over 41 inches.. So, as a guess I'd say that the water hole that I drove through had to be at least 3 and a half feet deep...

You may want to measure your tires while you are at it. I would be ecstatic if I had 31.5" from my 265's.

(I am comparing my measurements to yours)

What is the exact height mathematically? Anyone have that tire size formula for 265/16's?

Your right. It's more like 30 inches for my P265x75x15's..

I was using this gear calculator.... http://www.4lo.com

Even then it lists my tires at 30.6 inches, which is still taller than I just checked using my Stanley, which reads just a hair under 30 inches in height for my tires..

Thanks for all your comments.....

I am going to check my 2003 manual, maybe the exact answer is there..

In the mean time the message I am getting here is that as a rule of thumb the truck should not be driven into water higher than the top of the rims... is this fair ??

Cheers..

I don't know about that...here's some pics of a guy in my club that had mud sucked right into his auto tranny. You can see his mud caked tranny filter in one of the shots. http://community.webshots.com/album/61297428fQqzyt

No, amazingly enough it still runs. He had the dealer flush it out, but it does have problems now and then. I'm sure it won't last too much longer though.
