V8 VVTi owners

Did you have any experience with the non VVTi 4.7 ???

I have a VVTi V8 as a loaner and it has a very different feel about it. Torque appranetly not that different but it seems to have more grunt low down.

The real benefits to VVti is you vary valve timing for torque low down and power up top and it seems to me like its working.

Also, did they change the springs/ride ?

I have an 03 Sport V8 with X-reas and the loaner is an 05 Limited V8 VVti and it definitely rides better. It has X-reas but I think it also corners a little flatter.

Any comments/experience ?

Thanks.

I had an 04 tundra, and it was a slower than my 05 4runner. They gave you a 4runner as a loaner? Last time i was having work done on my Tundra, i got a Focus as a rental

I can't comment on the 2UZ VVT-i, but can on several other Toyota/Lexus engines with the same system. It's more than a subtle revelation, improves performance throughout the rev range with better economy and lower emissions than the fixed valve train engines. The newest engines entering production this year (Avalon, GS, IS, more to follow) have dual VVT-i with even greater gains.

About your loaner's handling, it might have the rear air suspension. I had an '03 Limited with X-REAS and rear air bags. It rode more firmly and with better control than the stock X-REAS, even with the hopeless Dunlop Grantreks.

SHut up!!!! I dont want to know about the VVTi V8!!! I just got the idea out of my head to trade the 03 in for an 05 and you just had to bring it up again!!!

J/K

Everybody I have heard from said the 05 had quite a bit more sting than the 03/04s. Haven't heard anything about it handling better though. Maybe your shocks are just worn J/K

I was chatting to salesman who sold me the 03 and he said I should try the 05 because of the new VVTi V8.

So I said give me one when I have my 03 for service so he gave me an 05 with 3 miles on the clock...

Good thing, stealer were trying to fix a rattling sunroof and managed to get it jammed open

Then they said they were going to have to send it out to a specialist to fix it ...WTF ???

Anyway, this new 05 will have 100 miles on it when they get it back.

Lowend punch is markedly improved... anyone have a 0-60 time for the VVTi vs the standard V8 ???

you should just time it....i mean its not your car who cares if you beat the ÅÅÅÅ out of it thats what my theory always is with loaner cars...of course ive never had one but i learned that from my dad..

his gs400 was in for service for about 2 weeks and they gave him an RX330 (2005) fully loaded with navigation for his loaner...the dealership is located in buffalo (my cousin works at it) and we live in pittsburgh...anyways we drove the loaner back...i dont really like the car but whatever...he drives it as his DD (30 miles a day) and than he drives the car to ohio...than to virgina beach...than back to buffalo

hahaha talk about atking advantage of a loaner

I know right?! I'd be burning the rear tires off of it! The loaner camry I got when my '90 4runner was getting service did see a lot of 6krpm operation and reverse donuts on grass

I got first dibs on your OME lift, if you do !

Remember guys, besides the variable valve timing, the '05's also have a claimed 270 HP. Our "old" 4th Gens only have a claimed 235 HP (both figures are from Toyota, real world who knows). That difference, with the better low-rev torque supplied by the VVTi, is probably the difference you are feeling.

I had a look underneath and the headers are different. They don't join until almost where the main system starts. Much longer before they join.

The VVti concept means more torque and power for a given capacity... without it you can tune for torque but you have no top end. Kinda like when I used to build the old 'Buick' 3.5l V8's for Landies back in the UK, we would use a high torque cam. Great for offraoding but ran out of steam by 3000 rpm. (the engines we rebuilt came from a P5 sedan with a high power, top end cam)

VVTi effectively gives you a high torque and a high power cam in one. Trust me, as you take off, you really can feel it.

The 06's should start arriving August/Sept which fits my timeline well.

I am thinking they may offer some new color(s) for 06 and looks like we may kid a bright skid plate and side steps on the Sport....bring the 4runner in line with the Sequioa and Tundra.... all I got to do know is persuade my leather guy to switch my interior over....

Its only money, right

David
