Upper Idler pulley on 3.4L

Can anyone tell me what the upper idler pulley on the 3.4L (5VZ-FE) bolts to? Does it just bolt to the rear timing cover (the meatal plate that bolts to the heads behind the timing gears) or does it bolt straight threw that and into the block?

I know this might be a rather odd question, but it's very important for my 3VZ-FE head swap.

Maybe someon has access to the microfiche and a good viewer......or maybe the Toyota manuals on CD??

The rear timing cover is too flimsy to support that bearing. I just replaced one about a month ago so I should remember, but I don't.
It either bolts to the block itself or to the lower intake (aluminum). I want to say its the block, but I can't say for sure...

Thanks alot. I would like to have the info before then, but will take what I can get. I'm doing a head swap on the 3.0L and am at a stand still because of the timing. I have the intake so I'll take a better look at it. If it bolts into the block, is there any way that you can get me a picture? I'd appreciate if so.

I've seen that much and it didn't help a whole lot. I appreciate the effort though. What I need to know is if it bolts to the engine block or not......and if possible some pictures. I might just have to go out to the salvage yard in the next town over to see if they have a 5VZ-FE block that I can take a look at. The local ones don't have any newer Toyota 4Runners/Tacomas/T100s.

I do think your best bet will be to hit the junkyards and look for yourself because it will be difficult at best to take a clear digital pic of what you want.

Is the tensioner in a different place on the 3.0L? should be the same setup?

The tensioner on the 5VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE are hydraulic. The tensioner on the 3VZ-FE uses a spring. Also the timing belts are different in the length and amount ot teeth. Two tooth difference. Length isn't a big deal. The upper idler on the 3VZ-E bolts to the intake and on the 5VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE they bolt up at the same place......I just need to find out where that it and get the idler pulley.

You are the freaking man. I'm going to have to see if I can aquire one of those brackets. I guess I need to buy a book for the 5VZ-FE engine too.

As a matter of fact, it you were willing to sell me that bracket and both the front and back timing covers off that engine I'd really appreciate it. I understand that you're busy, but I need those parts to finish my project.

You can read about it if you like:

I'f not I'll look for a local guy that can come pic the parts up.
