Turn signal/headlight problem

Ok, when I turn my turn signal on my headlights will blink off halfway through pushing the lever up or down. Then after i finish turning and the blinker releases my headlights will completely switch off and I have to jiggle the lever to make them turn back on. If i hold the turn signal halfway down it will switch the lights off as well until I release it. It's a 98 4runner. Anyone have any ideas?

The 3rd gen runners have problems with the headlight switches. Need to replace that piece. They are about $130 from the dealer (and you get only the light switch) or they can be found at wrecking yards, which is a complete assembly.

fyi they are interchangeable with 96-99 Rav4 headlight switches (head light ONLY, wiper is different)

Or go to http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214074. Mine does the same thing. I've taken the damned thing apart several times to clean the contacts, even soldered the contacts a little and it always comes back in the next month. You are better off just buying a new switch, since most wrecking yards want to sell you the whole steering assembly or at least all of the ones in my area do.

Thanks guys, I'll look into that switch. I love buying $130 replacement switches instead of new shocks

Check out that link I just gave you. When I checked it was $88 instead. First select the year and model. Next, click on the electrical tab. Then click the chassis electrical tab. Lastly, click the switches tab. The headlamp swith tab will be there then order. Save the $40+ more towards your shock.

Is this a doable install or do I have to take it in to the shop?

You can do it yourself. Just unscrew the 3 phillps head screws for the steering column cover. Then there are 2 small screws holding the switch in. Make sure you have a magnetic tray or plastic bags or you'll be an idiot like me and lose them to put the screws in. Then undo the connectors. Instal is the opposite.
