The "Z" in the engine code 5VZ-FE stands for forced induction in Toyota engines.

If it's in the first group, it's not factory installed but was designed and built for forced induction.

If it's in the second group, it's factory supercharged. For factory turbocharged, the letter "T" is used in lieu of the letter "Z".
examples:
4A-GZE is an A-series engine with DOHC sport cam angle (G), supercharger (Z), and EFI (E). 2L-T is a L-series engine with turbocharger (T). 1KZ-TE is a KZ-series engine with turbo (T) and EFI (E). 1KD-FTV is a KD-series engine with multi-valve (F), variable nozzle turbo (TV).

Seems strange that if it was designed for forced induction, they would give it 9.5:1 compression. I guess if it was only meant to run lower boost amounts it would make sense.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did this cost you about? Later down the road I am more than likely going to do this to my rig.

My cost is not representative of how much it would really cost because I was sort of a guniea pig for a kit that never materialized. However, if you were to have it done, I would guess in the 5k-8k range with all the electronics, tuning, troubleshooting etc...

I have been tuning though - adding back in timing as the weather is getting cooler. Feels pretty good now and I want to get some real world numbers to see if this has all been worth it!

So do we! LOL

But keep on tuning! you will find that sweet spot and go "yeah, that is it"

I love it when it gets cooler here, it feels SO much more peppy at 70 degrees then 110.

I am surprised more have not gone the turbo route. There are a lot of used turbos floating around in various forums these days and can be picked up for cheap.

The thing is superchargers aren't that expensive and a lot easier to install, just a bolt on affair. But you will most likely also need fuel mods, just like a turbo set up.

I was also really surprised that apparently the 5vz was built for boost. I guess that is why they last so long.

Do you have any pics of your mani before it went on the truck?

I am actually having a new one built and am picking it up this week. My old set-up used the stock drivers side mani that fed into a log stlye turbo mani on the passengers side. The new ones are both equal length tubular with a larger crossover. I will take pics when I pick it up and post them up.

Sio,whats' the total cost for an average owner to turbo their V6? Looks like about $5k in parts and labor easily.

x2, the crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons are forged from the factory, I think iron as well as the block so all that's needed is money and insanity.

And BTW this is a SWEET 4Runner, if I ever transplant a 3.4 into my truck I'll definitely turbo and ask you for info.
