Tundra brakes on a 3rd Gen

pad change is easy...just pull out the clips & springs and pull out the pins and then the pads. you might want to push the pistons back a bit (to get more room for new pads) with the pads in there to get more leverage with a flat head. if your mc res is full, may want to take a bit out as pushing the piston back moves the fluids back too. reinstall clips & springs, top up res if needed and youre good to go.
and yes ebelen1...i was thinking about the brake upgrade nazi's when i wrote that haha. on paper it may not be an upgrade...but we dont drive paper do we? since ive put them on, ive had no fade even after a hard day of wheeling with lots of brake torquing and very steep decends. only time will tell if ill get warp...but we all know that wont happen.

So If I understand this correctly the 231's need to have a 1mm or 2 ground off so they clear the rim? Or is there more that needs to be done? I have a T-100 and I have been thinking about doing this when I put pads on.

What year Tundra were the calipers and rotors from ?
Do the runners brake line screw right on the Tundra caliper?
Will this conversion work on any 16" 3 gen 4r?
Good job on the photos

Kurt,
Did you ever do a caliper rebuild write up? I have some 199's and I bought the calipers rebuild kit is on its way from Toyota. Any help would be appreciated.
Also did you have to buy two caliper kits? Or was one kit for two calipers? I only ordered one, so I guess I'll find out...

I've been reading posts about upgrading to Tundra brakes. I have a 97 4runner ltd. From what I see, the calipers should clear the 16" wheels with no mods (199s). Do they take care of the warping problem? I'm sick of my rotors warping every few months.

it took care of my warped rotors. ive only had em on for about 10,000km and no warping or any issues what so ever. what rotor/pad combo were you using? have you always had warping issues?

I just finished installing doing the Tundra brake upgrade on my '00 Runner. Here's what was installed:
- rebuilt Tundra S13WE calipers
- Brembo slotted, drilled, plated Tundra rotors
- SS brake lines
- Hawk HPS brake pads
The install was very straight forward with the exception of the rear SS line that didn't fit properly in the bracket over the diff. The only trimming needed for the dust shields on the front was immediately by the middle of the caliper. If not trimmed slightly, it would rub on the inside of the rotors.
Initial braking after the install was a bit disappointing, but after I bedded in the new pads properly I was thoroughly impressed. The hotter these pads get, the better they grab! The truck stops amazingly well now so I am very pleased with the upgrade. I will try to post some pics soon.
BTW, I was also pleasantly surprised that the stock Runner antisqueal shims fit the Tundra calipers. That alone saved me about $50 CDN from the Stealer.
If you need new brakes anyway, this is the way to go. Just as a side note I got 140,000 km (87,000 miles) out of the stock setup with about 1/16" left to go on the pads before they hit the low pad indicators.
Total cost was about $350 USD.

where in canada are you? im guessing you ordered yours from the US? i ended up getting mine from pythonparts.ca so paid a bit more..but didnt have to pay cores. i still have to get some SS lines and do a fluid flush..

I'm just outside of Toronto. Got the SS ines from a local supplier, Raptor Racing. I ordered the rest of the stuff thru the US. I bought a used set of calipers on eBay for $100 and was lucky that they were still like new and didn't need much attention to build them back up to new specs. The best price that I could find in Canada for calipers was $160 CDN plus core charges of $50 per caliper. Brembo's and pads were also from eBay.

If so where did you get those?
I am getting ready to do mine too and I have a set of use calipers going in so they may need a rebuild depending on the shape after I get a chance to look them over.

Did you install a Toyota caliper rebuild kit when you "rebuilt" the Tundra calipers?

You will need one, I made the mistake of ordering two, now I just need to find the time to rebuild them...
1sttoyotaparts.com had the best shipped price that I could find. Good luck!

Jamie, I was lucky with the calipers and I just needed to take them apart, inspect, clean and paint them. Didn't need to install kits as the dust boots, seals and pistons were 100%. I do however plan to get a couple of rebuild kits "just in case".

A few pics of the install. I did not have to trim the dust shields to get the calipers to fit but did need to trim the dust shield to prevent the inside of the rotor from rubbing adjacent to the caliper. SS brake lines installed as well.
