Hello all,

My 4Runner starts fine if it has been sitting, off, for a good while. But, if I drive it even 10 miles down the road and then turn it off, when I try to immediately turn it back on it will crank right up, but then die out within 2 seconds.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about this issue?

It has done this a few times now, one day being a 45 degree day, low humidity, and today again being around 25, medium humidity.

 

so when its warm it doesnt want to start just cranks? I had the same problem for a year with my 1998 tacoma 2.7L turned out to be the fuel pump, i was checking the pressure wrong and had a clogged fuel filter which was holding the pressure from the rail to the filter so made me think the fuel pump was working but it wasnt.

Check you fuel pressure between the fuel pump and the fuel filter, not sure if the 3.4 and the 2.7 have the fuel lines going up the driver side wheel well but just check your pressure around there. Make sure you check if its holding the pressure if its not then the fuel pump needs to be changed.

Good luck with the diagnosing. Ill keep an eye on here and try to help as best as I can.

 

I would say change the fuel filter and see if that cures the problem.

Mine was doing the same thing.

The gas these days seem to clog these filters much faster every year.

 

Fuel pump is dying. I just did mine in december and it took 2-3 hours and didnt require a lift, just a floor jack to lower the tank.

Since the car starts just fine after it's been sitting, I would assume it's the filter over the fuel pump...I'm assuming this because it cranks right up with ease when it's been sitting.

I will look into the Fuel Filter, Unless my logic doesn't make sense?

 

a cold pump works better than a hot pump. The filter wont help.

Thanks Coffee, I read through there and it sounds like you are correct. When you say a cold pump works better than a hot pump, do you mean when I start it and it fires right up, as opposed to when it's been running it won't stay on?

I read your comments towards the end of that thread, and it seems your theory makes sense.

I was wondering do I have to buy a "cold pump" or are all fuel pumps the same?

 

cold like when it sat overnight and hot when you shut it down after driving it. They are all cold when you buy them.

 

Haha awesome. I think you are right about the fuel, in a sense evaporating/incinerating, because when it's a hot start, it'll stay on for 2 seconds and die quickly, but if i tap the gas (flooding the lines with fuel i imagine) it fires up and stays on no problem.

 

my truck would fire up on first try when it was cold but after driving for a few min it would just crank no start up well it would start then die 3sec later but once started it would run just fine. I drove my truck from arkansa to colorado with that problem I just had to use starting fluid every time I stopped to eat or to stretch but once started it ran fine. Had the problem for 1 year when I was finally thought the correct way to check the fuel pressure which i stated on the earlier post.

Im almost certain its going to be your fuel pump and hope it is because while i tried to diagnose my problem on my truck i spent alot of money all because i didnt check the fuel presssure correctly. What happens is the diaphram or whatever is broken so it wont hold the pressure in the line and with a bad pump the pump doesnt have the pressure to pump the fuel up again.

Check the pressure before you trow a new pump just to make sure its better to check that then to go and spend the money and time to change the pump just to have it not be the problem.

 

Thanks Vikkz, I'll keep everyone posted on the problem. This sounds like the fix everyone around the interwebs is coming up with. If this is the case then it is not a huge priority for me at the moment, but it sounds like something that needs to be taken care of before the Fuel Pump stops working all together.

 

i take this certain problem very serious just because i had a hard time with it and I dont wish anyone has to go through as much trouble with it as I did. Good luck

 

All I can say is I must have really good luck with fuel pumps or you all have really bad luck!!

Do you all drive around with less than a 1/4 tank of gas at all times.

Stepping on the pedal does nothing but give it more air does not give it gas like in the old carb engine days.

i have owned 7 different vehicles over 12 years and this tacomas was the first to get a bad fuel pump. I always fill up again at 1/4-1/2 tank for that very same reason.
