Trip Odometer Stopped

Anyone have any ideas? I have been trying to figure out how the trip odometer works. it just stopped working. the regular odometer is working, just the trip isn't. any help would be appreciated.

Mine stopped in the 96, then I realized my odometer had stopped too. I tried pushing it in a few times with no luck, then my husband reached over and pushed it from the passenger seat and voila! Odo and trip odo is back, 'cept now I'm afraid to reset it for fear it will stop again. Right now I'm only about 300-500 miles off on the odo.
Mine's mechanical, not lcd like the 99's. I haven't pulled the cluster to see, logic makes me think plastic gearing just from how it works.
