TRD Headers & Cat-Back

I had two air line issues and a fuse block issue this past weekend - all were clearly heat related. I've been thinking about wrapping the headers, but there's such a Pro/Con controversy around doing that...
Why is there such a huge increase in temps when you install headers? Is it just the ceramic coated variety that causes this?

I think the ceramic coating is supposed to help insulate, and thus reduce the underhood temperatures. Both the ceramic coating and the header wraps are supposed to trap the heat inside the headers. The benefits are not melting stuff, lower ambient air intake temperatures, and better exhaust flow due to less cooling/contraction of the exhaust gasses, which slow them down.

Yeah.. the ceramic coating is supposed to retain the heat in the header and help usher more away from the engine compartment. I think something else is up, but I can't get past how the temp increase seemed to follow the header install.

Did anyones TRD headers come with any instructions? Do those instructions say to weld?
I left my truck down at the shop just before 9AM to get the headers installed and got a call today after 5PM saying they need to keep the truck. The service guy said they didn't realize they had to be welded...
Looking around I see they come with instructions in the box.

They need to weld a flange on your cat so it will bolt up to the TRD collector. They should be able to handle that. Your alright, some do need to have this done to bolt everything together.

The keyword being "up to". Guess it depends on the individual setup mostly.

When I talk to my dealer about putting on a set of headers that's all that I heard was well, were going to have to weld your pipe. Which is funny cause mine is a 98 and doesn't need welded. They kept saying they did cause there instruction that they can pull from the TRD site said that it required welding. So tell them to look at there instruction on there TRD site. IT IS PART OF THE INSTULATION!! Don't let them try and stick it in further than i'm sure they already are.

I had the kid in parts that I know look it up and give me the directions. I just dug them up and they are weird. In the accual instructions it doesn't really talk about the flange on the cat and welding but the intallation prcedue checklist state #6 Grind flat cut end of catalytic converter #7 Pre-fit and tack weld flange onto catalyic converter. Remove and weld. If you don't mined me asking how much are they charging to install them. I still havn't had mine installed yet. I'm not sure if I should send them to get ceramic coated Or were to get them coated. Debating on letting someone else install them or just do it my self. I didn't want the aggravation of installing them my self but I geuss it better than the aggravation of dealing with someone that doesn't know what there doing.

It adds a little more rumble but not much more than the TRD cat-back does itself that I could tell. Maybe if I was outside the cab and had someone else drive by or give it some gas I might notice it. I'll post pics in another post.

It looks GOOD.You got some nice pics that I was going to ask about but you cought it with a pic. I was going to ask you about the springs and if you seen were they welded at and you covered it with the pics. One of the things they tell the mech to check when he is done is verify that the air condition condenser drain tube does not point at the collector. It should point straight down or slightly toward the pass-side wheel well so it will drip on the frame rail. LOOKS GOOD hows the HP noticeable?

They took out my TRD air filter and put in a stock filter. Apparently the oil from the filter was getting into the air intake and screwing up the sensors. I OK'd that. I just took it out of the box and put it in. I suppose it was over-oiled from wherever it came from. I guess I'll clean it, let it dry comletely for a couple days, oil it and let the excess drain off for a couple days then throw it back in. I'll keep the stock filters for the supoer dusty trails liek this weekend at Big Bear I went on. I also had the 90k service done and so it was a huge chukn of change in the end but it purs now but has the rumble and attitude of a big cat!

I just went and look at my A/C drain and it is on the pass side on the fire wall. Mine is staight and you can ajust it from side to side. If yours has a bend in it like some vehicles it would then need to be checked. If yours is straight there is nothing you can do anyways. If your is set up like mine its already dripping on the frame and it can't reach the exhaust anyway. ARE YOU S/C

The guy who worked on the truck came out to chit chat with me when I was checking it out in their customer parking lot. He said I need to get the S/C and Isaid after what I just paid you guys I don't think so for a long while. Some day...
I just wanted all the exhaust in place to handle all the s/c cramming more air in.

I like the sound it's fairly deep compared to a lot of exhaust I've heard. Sounds like it means business compared to all the exhaust tips the tuners are putting on their cars that make it sound like a lawnmower.

And did you mention what you paid for the headers and cat-back?
Thanks
