Transmission Slipping

Howdy Gang, has anybody noticed a problem that feels like their trans. is slipping? Here's the scenario: Heading into a corner, I apply the brake and slow down to about 15-20 mph. As I enter the corner and begin to hit the gas, the engine revs up about 1000 - 2000 rpm without actually putting the power down to the wheels (almost like i'm in neutral). Then, the trans. seems to "catch" and the truck lurches forward. After that things are fine. Same thing happens if I'm rolling towards a red light and the light turns green before I actually stop. I hit the gas to get moving and I get the engine revving without the response going to the wheels. Anybody else have a similar experience?

I've got a 2004 SR5 purchased Sept. of last year w/ 9000 miles

thx

It sounds like it may either be low on fluid or the filter gasket may have blown out. The trans pump may be sucking up air rather than trans fluid at times.

Yes first thing, check the fluid level, color, and smell. Look for airation or discoloring.

That is perfectly normal for an auto.

An automatic transmission grabbing neutral going around corners and then re-engaging most certainly is not perfectly normal.

The same thing happens in my '01. I've gone to 2 dealers and they said it's normal with the ECT transmission. I can guarantee that it's not normal!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but does your 4runner also hesitate when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear? With mine, the RPMs drop a little bit and I loose momentum before the tranny gets into 2nd gear.

Mine did the very same thing before I lost 2nd gear, but only in that gear. My fluid was pitch black with metal shavings in it ... BAD, but not my doing. Good luck!
