Transmission questions
- I have a 1988 Toyota 4x4 with a 4 banger and a five speed transmission. When I baught the truck I was told, by the guy I bought it from, that the transmission would need to be replaced. I don't know why he thought this, I didn't think fast enought to ask him. The truck has 295,500 miles on it and runs good. the only problem I've noticed with the transmission is that when down shifting you almost have to come to a complete stop to get back into first gear. I was wondering if there were any signs I should watch for and/or thinks I could check to know if my transmission is on it's way out. I'm going to be moving in December so I would like to get it figured out before then, so that it doesn't die going down the high way with all my stuff loaded up in the back.
- I've checked local junk yard for a replacement. I have had no luck finding anything that would work. Does anyone know how hard, how much, and where I would get the parts to rebuild a transmission like this. Or somewhere I might find a transmission.
remember I'm a broke college kid so I'm trying to keep it cheap.

I had almost the same problem you do in my 87' 5 speed, but mine was a totally screwed up clutch. I couldn't get mine into first gear if I don't shift as I crept to a stop at a light. Then of course I would have to sit with the clutch in. I had my clutch replaced and the mech. was shocked how it wasn't right, I don't remember how he tried to explain it, but it was something like my clutch wasn't screwed down flat, so it as rotating, touching the whole time. Anyway, you might want to check your clutch out, atleast before you go and buy a new transmission.

I think you're right. My other Toyota doesn't go into first until you slow down to less than 5 mph. But with my truck is basiclly a complete stop.

As far as a salvage yard, www.yotayard.com would probably have something you could use...they are nice people.
