transmission problem -3.4, Tacoma, auto, 4x4

So a few hours ago I went mudding. after getting stuck I rocked it a couple times (not very hard at all), then all of a sudden after putting it in drive the RPM's went flying up and the tires did nothing. Its stuck in neutral and no matter what I shift to I still got nothing. I also tried shifting through all the 4x4 ranges and all that good stuff. My reverse lights come on when in reverse so its shifting correctly just no communication to the tranny. Have no idea where to start please help!

Check your ATF level. Any check engine lights come on? If so, could be a solenoid in your tranny.

Maybe while you were frame deep in goo and rockin back and forth something got pulled out like a sensor wire? Or maybe you got some goo in the wiring and it's shorting something out.

I've always heard rocking an auto tranny is hard on it, but I thought it was because over overheating. I guess the sudden shifting back and forth could also be hard on the pistons and valves in the valve body. Might start by checking the shift linkage under the truck (I think the reverse lights work off a switch under the shifter so the linkage could have slipped out of adjustment or come loose and they would still light up). If that's all fine, I might pull the VB and send it off to IPT for testing as that is easier that pulling the whole tranny. I guess another possibility is the torque converter, but you'd have to pull the tranny to replace that.

Good luck.

Too high of an idle will cause the auto to grab alot and result in you using alot of brake pedal. Is the engine totally stock? what are the rpm's when this happens?
