I've noticed that occasionally my tranny hump gets very warm. IE...when my right leg rests against the carpet and edge of console it is really quite warm almost hot. The shifter shaft gets hot as well as the bag. I thought maybe since I did the bodylift (many years ago) and I removed 2 of the 3 rubber boots from under the shifter bag, that it was exhaust heat from the intermediate pipe. I went underneath and stuck some foiled hot water tank insulation to the underside of the tranny hump. It hasn't solved it.

My fluids are all topped up and I am dreading if this is going to be a co$tly transmission problem. When I crawl underneath and touch the tranny itself it's luke warm to the touch.

It is of course more noticeable in warm weather and non existent in rain or cold weather. I do know that it was not like that a couple years ago, even in the 30-40 degree celsius weather in the okanagon.

Any ideas?

 

Just get a tranny cooler and be done with worrying.

Since my body lift I actually get hot air coming up through mine, and the floor is very hot. My boots are in very bad shape, thus the leak and I hope to cobble something together this weekend to stop it. 30c + the humidity this week pushing the feels like temp to 40, add to that the hot air coming in the shifter, felt like I was gonna die!
Since you meantion the tranny is warm I imagine it's just hot air off the motor/exhaust, check the condition of your shifter boot(s), they may be tore like mine.

 

My 2nd gen did that, I guess you could call it "normal" but the hotter the temp gets, the sooner your tranny will go. Go with a Hayden tranny cooler...installed mine last week, now I don't have to worry at all (this was on my 3rd gen but same thing goes for your truck).

Side not, if you ever plan on hauling anything heavy in the back of your truck or on a trailer for any distance longer than your driveway, I would definitely reocmmend going with a tranny cooler, it will really save you some $$ down the road.

Yep, mine gets hot, too. I find a good synthetic oil helps cut the temps maybe 10-20 degrees:

I've heard of some folks applying some reflective insulation in the tunnel area to keep the heat out of the cab.

 

All I can do is testify. Only had my 4R for a month but the change in the coin tray gets piping hot when I run for a while. I'm thinking of retrofitting a coffee cup heater there! I hope for both our sakes that it's just a design issue and not something ready to go.

 

My 89 22RE 5spd gets super hot. I took the center console parts off that surround the shifters. The metal plate that they go through gets white hot....my girlfriend put her bare foot on it and found out the hard way. I think it is just a design flaw.

Just tell the ladies to keep thier nude parts off of it and all should me well.

 

it's perfectly normal. my manual even says not to ride barefoot because the floor gets hot

 

I am a little relieved now that it seems it's a snafu. I have only noticed it the last couple years but I think I might do a little preventitive maintenance by going synthetic, adding a transcooler, and retrofitting a better boot system.
