transmission help, searched all day

transmission help, searched all day

Hey guys im new to the forum and have a 99 4runner 2wd v6 with currently 183000 miles. I have been interested in changing my transmission oil. I bought the 4runner used and went to the dealer and had them check the national service history for me and it turns out the previous owned had the transmission oil changed at 60000 miles. The oil now is a dark pink/brownish color and i have searched and read through pretty much every thread on whether or not to drain and fill/ flush or just not change the oil at all. Ive gotten different answers from my toyota dealership and the local firestone/ goodyear guys on what to do. This is my only vehicle i have for school and work and i want to keep it runnin for a long time to come. What do you guys suggest, take a chance and have it changed or just leave it?? i need some help

I vote for flushing, but don't expect that to undo years of neglect. It might be on its last leg either way.

Another vote for flushing and adding an external cooler and bypassing radiatior cooler

Go for the flush. You can do it yourself at home if you feel competant enough. Best procedure we have kicking around for this right now is located here.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go ahead with the flush after talking to a couple mechanics down at toyota. Had it done this morning and it seems to be running just as good as before so im hoping everything will be good

Did they remove the tranny pan to clean it, the magnets, and the filter?

No they didnt drop the pan, i asked and they said they didnt do that which is a similar answer i read another guy got from the dealership as well. But for 100 dollars for the flush from the dealer i figured i couldnt beat that, if things stay good im gunna drop he pan myself and take a look like in the link you posted.
