I just got under my 1993 4Runner with the 3.0L (auto) to change the oil...and noticed two plugs that where close to each other....one was the transmission drain and i cant figure out what the second plug is for...maybe just a second drain?..correct me if im wrong but the transfercase drain and fill plugs face the rear of the vehicle....and i believe in this application the drain on the transfercase had an allen head in it.

You are correct the transfer case drain and fill plugs face the rear of the vehicle. I have seen that 2nd tranny oil pan too, but I have never drained it or removed it. On my BMW there is a 2nd small tranny oil pan too that I have dropped and cleaned out. I think it is called a sump pan? There was no pickup tube in it, I guess it is just a little reservoir that collects sludge. On our Toyotas it looks like you would have to remove the cross member to drop that little pan though.

 

The second plug is also for the trans and should be drained when the trans is serviced.

 

Thanks for all the responses....yeah...i asked around and that seems to be the general consensus.....apparently it is just a separate sump.

 

I have a 92 3vz-e and I just drained my sump because I thought it was the transfer case drain plug(which I'm not sure exists) Anyways, does the sump need to be refilled or does it refill from the transmission fluid pan? If not..how is it refilled. I didn't see a refill hole on the sump pan; but maybe I missed it.

 

a couple of the guys on here have the factory service manual, do a quick search to find out who and pm them. they should be able to send you a copy, it has everything youll need.

I assume you have an auto tranny right? If so, it is part of the transmission so you will need to add some ATF to replace it through the dip stick tube for the tranny fluid. The level needs to be checked with the transmission hot and the engine running just after shifting through all the selections with the shifter.

The transfer case has drain and fill plugs on the back of the t-case (facing the rear of the truck). Make sure you take the fill plug out before the drain plug just in case you can't get the fill plug out you won't be stuck with no ATF in your transfer case. You fill it until the ATF runs out of the fill plug.
