I'm replacing the tranny(5sp)/transfer case and clutch on an 88 4runner. What is the best oil to use in the tranny and transfer,,,,,, and how do you remove the old pilot bearing and get the new one in!!!!!!!! Please help, stuck till I get the old pilot out and I don't want to score the seat or anything terrible. Thanks for your time............... TIM

 

There are several different methods, depending on what tools you have access to. IMHO, the best method is using a pilot bearing/bushing removal tood. It works like a gear puller, there are a set of inner jaws that get inserted into the bushing/bearing and locked on the inner edge, then the bushing/bearing is pulled out using the center threaded shaft and outer brace. You can probably rent one from some auto shops if you don't have one. A somewhat lower tech method is to find a punch that just fits into the center hole of the bushing/bearing, fill the entire cavity behind the bushing/bearing with grease and use the punch to then force the bearing out with the hydrolic force created by the grease. The second method may or may not work, depending on how badly the bearing/bushing is seized into the crank. What ever you do, try to avoid the brute force, chisel method.
