My factory Toyota Trailer Light Converter box burnt out. I have three options. First is to buy a new Toyota box, $111, Not going to happen. 2nd, Find someone on this forum to sell theirs that they arn't using. 3rd, Buy an aftermarket one, $35.

Does anyone have a stock converter just sitting around that they want to sell?

If I go with an aftermarket one, what do I need to do to remove all of the toyota harness?

 

I don't understand why these burn out so easy? I've seen this a bunch of times before on here. I guess you can wire in a napa one for less than half the cost. I'm not sure how to do it, so if someone wants to pipe in. I'm sure I'm going to need this done sooner than later with all the towing I do.

 

I've been towing with toyotas for almost 13 years now. Converter never burned out. But if it did, I would hope I could just order another one -- not have to buy a whole harness. WTF?

 

I bought a plug and play one for 50$ at napa that plugs into the back of each light it was very easy get one of those much easier than the ones you have to splice wires in

 

I bought an aftermarket one for about 40 bucks. I think it was made by reese? anyway works like a charm (knock on wood)

 

go aftermarket, they are far better........ they are a simple to install. Get the one that is plug in play. However they are meant to be installed on the right rear vs. the left rear. I simply switched the wires and put it on the left side.

I found a similar one at a local hitch shop for $35. I 'm going that way.

 

I ended up buying a Hopkins 4Runner Trailer Converter for mine. Part# 43415. It just plugged in.

You couldnt have posted this a while back huh Bruce. I bought the one from etrailer.com and installed in place of the old one. Like Bruce said, it was meant to be installed in the right rear. I did not notice this until I was finished.

I suppose they do this so you do not actually have to remove the old one. So, I had to swap to of the wires so that the correct indicator light comes on when I go to make a turn....

 

So, I tried to replace a broken 6-function light on my trailer. I messed up somewhere and blew the converter on my 96 4Runner. Not knowing what was up, I tried plugging the trailer into wife's Sequoia--burnt out the 4-way connector. Then (idiot), I plugged it in to our 95 land Cruiser--the Land Cruiser electrical reaked havac (blinkers stopped functioning & rig got stuck in Park...searched www.ih8mud.com and found that blown fuses in LC cause rig not to leave Park. Fixed fuses fixed all.) WELL, just got the Hoppy/Hopkins trailer direct plug in aftermarket converter ($45) at trailer supply.
