Trailer hook up on a 03
Need some help guys, I have a few questions.
1. I need a plug that will plug into the wiring bundle that comes on the 03 Runner. It is an all in one type, it has the brake lights and signals in it. It then must connect with a standard plug that goes to the trailer.
2. The stock trailer hitch it to high. I need one that comes with a 6 inch drop down. Not the 2 inch that comes with it from the factory. They have them at the store but they are too long. It goes in too far and hits the spare tire. Looks like I might have to use a hack saw and cut about 2 inches off it. Not fun!
Thank for the help!

Hi ScottSE,
I had my SR5 for 3 weeks, was setting up my hitch to tow a small boat trailer last week end. Here is what I used:
1. My trailer has a 4 pin connector plug, and I went to buy a 4 pin to 7 pin connector adapter that goes into the 4 runner socket.
2. My ball mount shaft extends about 7 3/4 inch and it fits right up to the spare tires, so if it is longer, you will need a different ball mount. Mine is a Reese Towpower 21175 ( 5000lb )
Hope it helps :pat:

Yep, sam ething. I found a 7 pin to 4-pin adapter at Vantage Auto Parts (was about $10) that takes care of the wiring issue. I did have to cut off some of the ball adapter (the one that came with the 4Runner is fine, but I had another one with a 2" ball installed). Cit it about 1/2 - 3/4" behind the rear end of the pin hole, then it clears the tire. Takes awhile with a hand hacksaw. Have fun!

I had to cut the ball mount shaft, too, and a reciprocating saw did the job in a few minutes. If you have access to one, it will save you lots of time, not to mention the wear and tear on your arm.
After you cut it, though, put some paint or coating on the exposed metal to keep it from rusting.
You can get the 7 pin to 4 pin adapter almost anywhere -- I found mine at KMart. $10 is about right (Toyota wants $20 for theirs).

I just bought a new 03 SR5 4x4 and it came with the wiring harness converter in the glove box. I would like the received body to be deeper, maybe there will be a aftermarket mod coming soon.
Cheers

I bought the 2 inch chrome ball mount with 2 inches of drop made by Hidden Hitch from Overtons for $29. It fits perfect with about 1/2 between the end and the spare.
Overtons also has many other ball mount models with different drops.
