TPS and vaccum lines
Hey everybody,
I have heard alot about cleanin your TPS and vaccum lines but i don;t know how...first off what does a TPS do and where is it and how to i clean it and second how do i clean my vaccum lines...thanks

The TPS is located directly on the other side of the throttle body from the throttle control lever. I would not suggest cleaning it. In fact, I'm not sure what you'd clean on it. If you do decide to clean it, make sure you have feeler guages and an ohmmeter to adjust it when you are done....if you so much as loosen the screws you will have to adjust it.
And don't clean the vacuum lines, just buy new ones.
You can clean the AFS if you are set on cleaning something though.

hey runner...thanks for the tips but isn't there alot of lines to replace? how much do you think that would cost? and i have heard that i might just have to replace the TPS becasue they go after a while and what is an AFS? thanks alot

TPS = throttle position sensor
AFS = air flow sensor
It will probably take $30 to replace all the lines...just guessing.
If the TPS was out of adjustment or bad the truck would run terribly.
AFS is located inboard from the airbox

MAF sensor = Mass air flow sensor
So, yes, they are both the same thing, some people call them differenly on different makes...I think it has to do with the way ariflow is measured but they both accomplish the same thing.

2nd gen has an AFM
3rd gen has a MAF
They are both trying to measure airflow and temperature but they do it different ways.
Do not replace your TPS unless you have trouble with it.
It can and should be adjusted via the link I gave you in another thread.

I wouldn't touch the TPS, they are set from the factory and if moved out of stock location, you will get idle surges and crapy acceleration. A stock sensor will cost upwards of 100$, aftermarket will run about 50$. But If you don't have any problems with it, dont' mess with it, I'm fighting the problem right now with my truck.

The O2 sensor may or may not help.....depends how bad it was.
I have never heard of cleaning the TPS.....maybe you mean cleaning the throttle body.
The TPS is a sensor (potentiometer or variable resistor) which tells the computer how far the throttle is open.

Well MTL mabye you can help me out....i have an 89 22RE and once in a while the engine will surge and hesitate then be fine...a couple days ago my check engine light came on for about 30 seconds when it got really bad...so i changed my fuel filter the next day and ran some injector kleen threw it and it seemed to elp ut its not solved...i have new wires and rotor and cap and plugs all of that...so if you have any adivece please let me know thanks\

Run the code to see why the check engine light came on. That is the first thing I'd do! All you have to do is short the computer (it will tell you how in the manual) and then count the blinks...its very easy and takes about 1 minute. The code will be stored in the computer if you haven't disconnected the battery since the light went on.

Most people call an AFS and AFM since it is metering the air not sensing it. what it does is have a spring loaded shut door that is connectied to a potentionometer (sp) the amount of vacuum that the engine produces when the throttle body is opened is metered by the degree of movement on the AFM's potentionometer. the potentionometer sends a voltage usually 0-5v depending on how far open the AFM is, and the computer figures out mathmatically how much air is comming into the engine by how far the door is open.
just wanted to straighten that out

Yes, they both measure airflow but using different methods that's all.

Then post it for us so we don't need to just guess at the problem.
