which is better TPS Manufactor,TPS Gurus, I need your help!

Ok, here is the on going saga with my tranny problems. I have a previous thread in here about it. I just wanted to say "thanks" to everyone whom has helped me so far. I discovered something odd about my TPS today and I need advice. I really can’t afford to spend a 150.00 for a new TPS if I’m wrong. My auto tranny seems to skip 2nd lock-up and shift prematurely into 3rd. I have no power until my speed increases and there is an audible “thump”. I have a voltmeter hook-up to the test point to ground and I monitor it as I drive. The voltage jumps from 2v to 4v, with a slight flash of 3v in between 2v and 4v. I had thought I had a bad lock-up solenoid. I am not getting a trouble code anywhere.
Today I went back and double check the voltage test from the E1 and TT connections. The voltage is supposed to increase with 1volt increments with throttle position change. I notice while turning the throttle that my meter would pause and read “OL” if you cross 3v. It would step from 2 to 3 to 4 and so on, but it always showed “OL” before going to 3v. It did this going slow or fast adjustment of the throttle. I could not duplicate this on any other voltages. I don’t know if it’s my volt-meter or if this is typical on a TPS. I could see where it wouldn’t matter a whole lot on a manual tranny but it might be what is causing my problem in my auto-tranny.
Has anyone seen this before? Also where is the best place to buy a new TPS? Advance Auto ranges from $89 to $150. I hate to buy cheap and have it bite me in the ass later.
Thanks again,
Average Dude

yes there is a problem with your tps sensor. there should be smooth voltage up to 5 volts. 5 volts being wide open throttle . 1 volt is idle.
if you dissconnect the tps connecter at the sensor there should be a full 5 volts on one wire. there is a ground wire and a feed back wire to engine managment. or ecu. in simple terms there is 5 volts provided to the tps. the more the throttle is opened the more voltage is sent to the computer.
id say check your wires but you have a bad tps.

I am getting 8volts wide open. Is that right? or is mine that messed up. Man I tell ya... the stealership told me I needed a new tranny. Their mechanic lost total credentials when he told me my tranny was slipping from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th. I told him I disagree since I've been monitoring the voltage as I drive. I have also disconnected the brain and the tranny manually shifts fine. His reply was he didn't know for sure cause he hasn't hooked it up to the computer. His assetment was based on a road test. I'm like... you want me to spend that kind of money and your not sure??? I don't think so pal!

yes at wide open throttle it should be only five volts. check at the connecter unplugged for 5 volts, if there is more trace the wire. to eliminate a possible wiring problem find the tps wires at the ecu and install your own wires from ecu to tps and check again if voltage is still high replace the tps. make sure there is no water in any connecter

Good advice, I'll do it tomorrow after work... How do you back the wire out from the connector going to the ecu?

I have a choice between, Wells from Autozone (cheapest). Standard, Sorensen, and Niehoff Ignition from Advance Auto. Anyone have pros or cons from various manus?

If I remember right, I think mine was $100 or $120 from the dealership. So you may want to go that route if you are going to spend that much. I wouldn't trust anything from Autozone (but the PP brake pads). Advance Auto has much better quality.

Just my $.02

excellent advice! I called the dealer and it's a 100.00, same price as the cheapest from Advance. I didn't even think about calling the dealer... I'm just not in the "getting violated" mood today... so I thought anyways! lol
