Toyota says I need to replace both Catalytic Converter

Well I had my check engine light come on last Sunday. I made an appointment with my local Toyota dealer(25 miles away). They called me today and told me I need both cats replaced. They quoted my $2615.00. I almost myself. I'm calling around now to the 2 local mechanics and see what the quote me.

Hmmm, your truck should only have 1 main cat, the other 2 cats that you see on your y-pipe are precats and can be removed without throwing a code (if you really wanted to).

Id just got out and get an aftermarket cat (about 100 bucks), bring it to a muffler shop, have them weld it in, and call it a day

Show me a legal OBD2 cat for $100, please.

Definitely take it to a muffler shop for CAT replacement though. Have codes reset. Sometimes they can do that there too. My exhaust guy does.

There are two main cats on a cali emission 2002 4Runner.

There are also 2 cats on 2000 cali spec vehicles. I know that it goes farther back in years, but now sure how far.

My rig kept throwing PO420's too. I spent $200 at the stealership to have them read the code, clear it and tell me I really didn't need to replace the cats. A trip to my local Walmart and $50 later, I got an ODB II code reader. Now, when my CEL light comes on, I just read and clear the code and move on. I've found no need to spend $2,600 on new cats and my Runner still runs great.

I found a local guy that has had good luck with aftermarket cats on an 04 Tacoma. He says it may be just the front cat. He charges $400 installed. Going to take my truck there. I love this truck, but $2600 is alot of money.

This is very bad advice. The problem isn't going to magically fix itself just because you cleared the code. The problem still exists, and failing cats can over heat and melt in on themselves, causing major engine failure.

The dealer is the BEST place to get a cat. Aftermarket cats are junk at best, and do NOT work well enough to keep your truck running right. IIRC, they are also not OBDII compliant.

I buy a lot of parts from the dealer, but that's one I'd have a hard time justifing. Unless it was stolen and my insurance co was picking up the bill.

ScanGauge reads and clears codes as well.... I love mine. Best $150 I've spent.

I certainly agree that the cost of those things is outrageous. Gotta talk to your government on that one though. Since the EPA regulates emissions, its Illegal for wrecking yards to sell used cats (which would drasitcally reduce costs) and most places that are certified to rebuild factory cats have ditched that business in favor of scrapping them out. Platinum and Rhodium are worth so much money, it doesn't make sense to reman them for $100 profit, when you can scrap them for $300 profit.

Well, if the dealer isn't concerned about the problem, I'm not going to be either. A friend of mine is a tech there and has never steered me wrong. Quite honestly, as much as I love my Runner, I'd trade it off before spending $2,600 on cats.

cats do have warranty over 100,000 miles to clean the exhaust enough
to pass inspection

sensors don't have any such warranty beyond the vehicle warranty

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 'all' 2001 and 2002 4runners had 2-cats, because all 2001-2002 4runners are 50 state legal emissions.

How many miles are on your vehicle. I've been known to diagnose a bad catalytic converter and have the customer's converter replaced under warranty.GM has Federal Emissions warranty I belive up to 100k no matter if base warranty has run out or not. I don't know if this is law or just a GM thing.
