I always thought with automatics that when you tow anything to do it with the overdrive off, but with my 2 sport atv's (about 350lbs each) and my two place snowmobile tilt trailer (mayby 500 lbs) would you even bother to turn it off? Let me know what I should do. Thanks Josh

Oh btw, it is a 98 limited 3.4 auto.

 

Depends on how its doing. If it keeps hunting up and down between 3rd and 4th, turn the OD off. Usually on hills and such. If it's happy, leave it alone.

 

So, it is not going to overheat the tranny or anything? I guess that is what I am most concerned about.

Your tranny is only going to overheat if it is constantly shifting between 3rd and 4th. If you can drive with OD on and it will stay in 4th the majority of the time, then you should be fine. I would think that you will be able to do it. That really isn't very much weight you are going have behind your rig. Just give it a shot. If it keeps downshifting then turn OD off; if not, leave it on.

Thanks Guys, This is the 1st slushbox I have owned, so I am kinda a newbe to the autos. I know that it is not that much weight, but I had to get the runner because my taco w/ 5 speed, 33's and not regeared has to be in 3rd floored to even have a chance to make it up hills pulling that trailer.

 

When I tow, I typically turn the OD off unless I'm on the highway and can maintain a steady, fast clip. Like Flamedx4 said, if it's not hunting (or if you're not "lugging" the engine) then leave it on. I just don't like to be turning low revs with that kind of load (I sometimes tow 3000 lbs. +) on the engine.
