Too many volts!!

Warming up the 92 at the g/f's house before I left and the batterey light came on and the volts pegged out above 18. After a minute it( batterey gauge) dropped a litl low and then rose to its normal position, where it stayed till I almost got home. Then the lights got real bright battery light on and pegged gauge again. Got home turned truck off and crunk it again and it acts normal. Alternator? Batterey? Gotta have this fixed tomorrow for my new job. Thanx for any help.
