Dude...I'm sorry man. I can only image how you feel. It's a good thing you didn't get hurt.
Just for future reference, I use the little small dome mirrors on my side mirrors so that I don't have a blind spot and I don't have to look back.

Too bad about the accident. Sometimes things just seem to work out that way. Good reason to wear seatbelts.
There is a way to avoid the blind spot by adjusting the mirrors different than the usual way. Here is one site I found with the instructions although there was another one I can't find right now. Scroll down to see the mirror adjustment instructions.
I've been driving with mine adjusted this way and it does work although you still have to watch for cars right up beside you and you may only see part of the car in one mirror before it disappears from the other so you've still got to pay some attention.
One disadvantage is that I can't see right down the side like I used to, but I think its a better way to adjust them despite that.
