So I guess I will ask seperately:

My uncle is looking for 31x10.5x15 A/T tires that aren't prone to picking up rocks. I Know my LTX's do this, so what would you recommend from your expierience?

 

any tire with decent void seems like it would throw rocks. My 31x10.5 Yokohama Geolandar AT's throw rocks quite a bit, but the Bridgestone Dueller AT's that came on my truck when I bought it didn't seem to have that problem.

It doesn't really bother me, I dont think the yoks throw rocks out behind the truck but I do get a loud smack on the undercarrige pretty often.

 

imo an AT that doesn't throw some pebbles just isn't an AT you would want to buy... but, in support of your dad's quest, i recommend you just pay a visit to the tire rack, plug in AT tires and then just visually compare the tread patterns. the ones that look most like street tires are probably your best bets to start with and narrow the search.

 

Your thoughts mirror mine - I kinda suspected that most real A/T's generally liked picking up rocks for the most part. But I'll let him know.

 

Prone to picking up rocks? Is he concerned about throwing them or having them clank the side of his rig? Tell him to get the tires he wants and some bigger mudflaps...my tires pick up and occasional rock, but nothign more than any other tire I've had and I park daily on a big gravel parking lot.

 

A/Ts will have small tread voids and pick up small gravel. M/T tires will not pick up anywhere near the gravel that an A/T will. When I have run M/T tires on gravel, I might hear one rock "ping" a mile, while with A/Ts, it is nearly a constant pinging.

When I used to run Swamper TSL/SX tires, never heard a rock hit.
