Tire size question

What, if any, are the benefits of going from a 265/70-16 to a 265/75-16 other than increased ground clearance?

I know the 75's are easier to find and have a larger selection, but after it's mounted, what's better? My 4Runner will see mostly pavement duty in all sorts of terrain (from coast to mountains). Offroad will not be very extreme (90% of what I drive can be done in a car). I may end up pulling a camper or even a small boat in the future (boat's not likely, but camper is planned).

Hmmm...I think you have most of your answer there in the post. If I wasn't going to wheel my truck I would have stayed the stock size with a less agressive tread and maybe saved a little gas?

Other then that...bigger tires look cool

Yeah, the more reasonable side of me sez I should just get the 70s and be done with it. However, I can't ignore the lower price and better offroad performance of the taller tires.

How appropriate was that smiley to my current dilemas

BTW, I notice you have Cooper STs. What do you think of them? They're one of the tires on my list.

Chris, you will only go up an inch in diameter, or an extra ~1/2 inch ground clearance. The width will be the same , just a higher sidewall.

We are thinking seriously about a travel trailer in the 19' range. What have you been looking at? If you don't mind me asking.

The Coleman Taos is our first choice. We would be towing it into the national forest and possibly backing into the unimproved campsite a bit (to be off the road). It's light weight will help in that aspect. We'd rather get a model with a shower/toilet, but those are too big for our garage (Homeowners Assocation rules).

The Taos has an 8' box, 12' overall. It weighs 1200 dry and has a GVW of 1500 or 1700, I can't remember which exactly. Either way, it's plenty light for the 4Runner.

Same problem here with the HOA. We will have to find a storage facility.

I just had a set of GY Forter HL's installed last week. They are a little pricey but give a good highway ride. They are a cross between an Eagle and a Wrangler with improved wet weather traction. I had the RT/S but had a hydroplane problem so GY gave me some help on the price.

Good luck on whatever you decide..

For the money I can not complain at all. When I got the ST's the Cooper place never seen them before but they were in the book. I paid $99 a tire which was WAY less then any of the other tires I was looking at.

I went through last year's winter in the northeast without a problem, I have never hydroplaned with them, drove from NJ to CO pulling a trailer, and took them offroad here in CO for a bit. I think the truck feels better with them then the stock tires, more stable, grippier(if that's a word?)

You definately hear them. Tad more then a BFG AT less then a MT; but I wasn't deaf or nuts:confused: 2000 miles later so I guess they aren't that bad.

Let us know what you wind up getting.

The STs are definately on the list. Around here, they run $130 installed. I'm also curious about the Cooper AT's. They're only $110 installed. If I'm honest with myself, the ATs will probably fit the bill, but I hate the idea of finding myself ill prepared at some point in the future. Dang, I hate these decisions.

Maybe it's just me and I am weird but when I drive around I check out the tires on other trucks. My G/F is always asking me why I am looking at tires? Anyone else do this; see a neat tire that you dont recognize and look harder at them?

Back to the point .....I noticed alot of the municiple trucks have the Cooper AT's on them and they usually beat their tires and trucks and see all sortsa terrain.

You might be fine with them, many here also like the Dueler AT's.

Yup, I've done that ever since I was in the market for new tires. I really want the MTRs now.

Oh good, I'm not the only one. For a minute there, I thought I was weird or something...
