Tire Experts-your Advice Please
I found what looks like a part of chain-link fence in my tire.
It is a straight piece that is stuck into the tire between the lugs.
It is located just off to the side of center- well within the tread, not near the sidewall.
It sticks out as far as the top of the lugs. My guess is I drove down a street that had construction in Ventura- we heard a clicking but I thought it was a rock lodged in the tread- it stopped making noise on the freeway, probably wore it down to the level it's at now. That was 2 days ago.
Yesterday I aired down and went mudding- no problems. I noticed the metal "spike" this morning. I could have run over the metal off-roading yesterday but my guess is it was in Ventura.
Luckily, I have certs for the tires- free tire. Problem is none in stock and 4-5 days wait.
I have only about 700 miles on the MT/R's so a brand new one will be ok right? Won't be off kilter or something with one new tire?
It's not loosing air and I drove freeway/city/off road with that spike in there. Of course I am not pulling it out but do you guys think it will be ok until the new tire comes in?
You know how deep MT/R lugs are- I can grab the piece of metal easily with my fingers. I tried to cut it shorter but it is so solid, I can't cut through it.
Thanks in advance.

I think youll be OK for those few days.........any longer and I would remove it (save it if ya have to) and plug the hole.
I dont suspect youll notice a thing with that few miles on those tires and a spankin new one. It shouldent pull, ect as long as all the air pressures are equal.

Just got my new MT/R this morning
It cost me $23 total for a warranty to cover the new tire. Nice!
If I didn't get the warranty, it would have cost me $190! Yikes!
It did seem to be a piece of chain-link fence after all.
It went almost all the way through the casing but then it seems like the chain link bent up and sideways through the tire.
I saw the old tire- the MT/R is a REALLY beefy tire. When they say MT/Reinforced, they mean it!
They were telling me the things people have had stuck in their tires- roofing nails, a wrench in the sidewall! a license plate jammed between the wheel and tire!

glad you got a new tire.... i am surprised you got a new one htough... I work for a place that does tires and suspension stuff, and if it was in the tread and not near the sidewall, and was also less than 1/4" then they would have patched it.... i am now at Wheel Works and this is what we would have done. I used t owork at America's tire Co and we would have done that their as well.... you owuld have only gotten the free tire if it didnt meet fixable criteria

I got the warranty on the tires originally for off roading. I asked if I damaged the tires on a rock, off roading, whatever the case and I was covered.
I'm glad they didn't force a patch on me. It would always be in the back of my mind off roading or on the freeway.

America's Tire / Discount Tire is probably the best place to get tires hands down
With their warranty, you can do whatever you want to em and it'll be virtually free to get em replaced!! woo hoo

you think I can go back to toyota and ask to see if the cladding is part of the warranty? I got a few scrapes (in varyin degrees) that need replacing eventually

funny thing is that my 4runner still does look "normal", although my better half has told me that my 4runner looks like a "robot truck" now. something like one of those you would see on the discovery channel's "Robots wars / battlebots"....
