I was wondering the same thing....
So you basically started out with the truck running fine, entered this rev-off and now it backfires under load? and how's the idle?
Sounds more like you might have slipped a tooth or two on the timing belt.
You also could have burnt a valve or two, but you'd need to do a compression check.

It is possible to at least check the timing to see if its off. Do you have a haynes manual? It tells you step by step in there...
I have one so if nec. I can scan the pages up for you to see. Like MTL_Runner said...it is possible you slipped a tooth, I'd lean more towards the burning of the valves or something if its backfiring though.
For the record...you have a timing chain...not a belt.

Thats about all you half to do to win and i also found that the crack in the exhaust manifold i welded when i first got the truck. it has re cracked around the weld and all the way around.
