timing problem
I have a 1994 Toyota Pickup (22RE, 4x4, 75K). The timing is off and I've had a couple people try to correct it. Each time when they adjust it, the engine runs very slow. I drove it with the adjustment and the gas pedal just sank into the floor with no response. One mechanic said the timing chain was bad, and the other said it was off a tooth or two. I just don't really think at 75K the timing chain is that bad. Has anyone had a similar situation and how did you fix it. (I know this is very vague, but its about all I know...that and that the timing is way off). Thanks for the help...

It might very well be your TPS (throttle position sensor). If I were you, I would reset my timing first though (it's free). I would use a wrench to crank the engine around to TDC ( "0" on your timing marks), then pull off the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing at the no. 1 spark wire. If it is not, I would pull the distributor out, line it up right and put it back in. Then adjust your timing according to your specific engine (i.e. mine is 10 degrees before tdc). If that doesn't work, go with a new TPS. I just replaced mine and the little bastard was 100 bucks. D'oh!
