I am about to change my oil, and diff oil. where do you guys take the dirty oil when you are done with your change? am I supposed to drop it off at like a jiffy lube?

 

Jiffy Lube will take used fluids, that's where I drop my old oil off. Some auto parts stores will take it too. Also check the blue pages in the phone book for recycling centers.

 

thanks for the quick response. now 1 more question if you don't mind, what do you bring it there in? after you drain it into your pan, what do you do with it?

sorry, I am a newbie at oil changes. I just decided I wanted to truly learn how everything on my rig works, and do everything myself.

 

Well right now I drain directly in to a

pan that can close up. Then I just take that to Jiffy Lube.

In the past, I'd just transfer the oil over to a gallon milk jug or a laundry detergent jug.

 

do they just drain the oil and give you back the jug then?

 

Good for you. Here in the Portland area we have curbside recycling and I leave my oil in gallon plastic milk cartons and they haul it away with the other recycling.

If you don't have that option, you could probably take it to Jiffy in the plastic milk jugs, or call them and let them advise you.

Yep. You'll probably see signs telling you to not leave the oil there for someone else. All you have to do is tell them you have used oil, and they will either dump it for you or else tell you where to dump it yourself. And it is free too.

 

You usually dump the oil in their used oil tank yourself. Then you can keep the jug or throw it away, whichever you decide.

 

I take mine to Autozone, and dump it myself. I don't even talk to the staff anymore, I just walk into their back room where the tank is, drain my oil, and then leave.

 

Walmart Supercenters here will take it too. I always put it into used plastic laundry bottles or when I can find the Mobil 1 in 5 quart bottles I use those. The laundry bottles are nice because they have a built in funnel.

 

I used to have a Blitz drain pan and I hated it because the lid wouldn't go back on right and it leaked.

You have a good point. The lid never goes on right on those things.

 

I have one like that.
If you take your oil to Autozone in a old container, they require you to take it with you. For some reason you cannot throw it away there.. So make sure you have extra towels!!

On another note, not to jack the thread but it seems your question was answered pretty well and its still a question about for people that change their own oil...

How the heck do you get to the oil filter. I changed mine for the first time wed and so the place that did it last time put it on really tight. I got the wrench, but how do you get a socket in there?? I don't even have any skid plates in right now and couldn't do it. Do you do it from the bottom or the top?

I know Pep Boys does too.

wow thanks guys! There is a jiffy lube that shares parking lots with my APT. so I think I will just walk there on my way back from class and ask! thanks for the help fellas!

 

I use a universal joint adapter with a long extension through the wheel well.
