I took a disgusting set of bull bars off my rig 2 years ago and watched the paint on my hood slowly disappear. Had enough a bought a bug deflector. Not always 100% sure if i like it but it definitely has stopped the stone chips! Don't have much of a bug problem either

I think that's the one that uses the gum drop bumpers. You don't want those.

 

I've got one, I dont notice bugs or rocks. But do be sure to take it off once in a while and wash underneath. it can get a bit grimey

 

The bug shields give a truck a sporty look and they have protected the front hood of my 02 Taco. There are many different styles and companies out there, I think bug shields are worth the investment.

 

I have the same one that Jason B has. Since it is partially transparent it will complement the color of your Runner nicely.
Also it is a no "drill" , no "gumdrop bumper" install.

I am on my 2nd Toyota OEM bugshield. The first one deflected a 2x4 and was destroyed, but did not hurt my hood or windshield. The OEM is pretty expensive though. The most important thing is you get one that wraps around the sides.

 

In reply to Jason's comment, you can use the gum drop bumpers but stick them on the bug deflectors instead of the hood. Same protection, different application.

I just got the factory one and did just that. Works great, no weird noises and it already has made itself useful. Even though my windshield still gets pelted by bugs there were a bunch on the deflector too that woulda been on my hood had it not been there. Plus I'm sure there were probably some tiny rocks and stuff hitting it b/c before I put it on there were a few chips on the hood where the deflector is now. I also think it looks great, esp with a runner with all tinted windows . Definitely worth the money.

 

That's even worse than applying them on the hood. It'd be easier for dirt to get stuck between the bumper and the hood. Notice how it vibrates a little at speed... you can almost feel the bumpers pushing the dirt into your clearcoat. At least by applying the bumpers to your hood, you know there's a clean surface between the bumper and hood.

I had a factory one once... now I have an EGR.
