Thinking of modifying MAF. Need your input please...

Hey all,

Was looking at my MAF the other day. As you already know, it's somewhat restrictive. Hence the reason many of us swap it out for the Supra MAF. but, I was wondering...why couldn't I just modify the existing MAF?

In the picture below, the red line indicates where the "walls" are on the stock MAF. The blue lines are what I would propose to do. The white elipse is the vane for the sensor. If I was able to widen the inlet, would that distort the readings from the sensor?

Alan, why not just swap your early 96-98 version for an airbox/MAF from a 99-02 truck?
It would be alot easier (simple repin), cheaper MAF and less restrictive.

Can anyone shed some light on swapping for a less restrictive MAF? Only reason I ask is I've been having trouble w/ different codes that could be MAF related and swapping for something that may provide more power could be the ticket.

The only thing that worries me is I heard MAF sensors were pricey. Anyone know?

Would it be cheaper than $5? I already have the parts (spares from other projects), I just need to know if the wider opening will affect the sensor.

Yup. I'm trying to track down another stock 96-98 MAF to see if I can further modify it. I suspect the vane can "loose some weight".
