im thinking of adding a 2nd battery (have an old optima sitting around that i might as well use). i dont want to put it under the hood because of lack of work ethic to move stuff around and whatnot. i just dont feel like making room to fit a red top optima. i plan on putting it in the cargo area, also because i am buying an air compressor, which has battery clamps, and id like to pretty much hard mount the portable compressor. anyways, i was wondering how long the battery would last if i didnt hook up the alternator to it. any feedback would be appreciated.

 

Not very long at all. We are talking hours (1-24) here, that's all I know.

yeah....probably not long, i guess it depends on how much you used it (or does it?) i've seen people use 2 optimas in the stock battery space, so it would be minimal work. if i were to get a 2nd battery, thats what i'd do, and then run 4 guage to the rear to a fuse block (much like bob's write up).

Where does it say ANYTHING about running a battery without it connected to an alternator? If there is, sorry, hand down. But if there isn't, you guys are going overboard.

that was my take on it....and besides, i think its almost pointless just to have a battery sitting back there. i can't see that being practical for very long. just my opinion.

hmmm.....i didnt say that there should be only one tread about each topic...i just said maybe he tried to get things a little more organized so when people in the future wanted some info...then BAM!!!! there it is. AND by having all related questions in one thread, that doesnt have a lot of info here on YT, makes it easier to find/ask questions.

 

i hope i didnt create any mess by creating this thread. i just wanted to know the best solution for my situation, and you cant always get that by searching.

after browsing around, i think i will opt for a solid setup. not just a hinky dink job with a few wires connected to a battery in the trunk so i can run some lights. i will start gathering parts this week, and hopefully be able to tackle it sometime soon. hopefully running wires from the alternator back wont be too tricky. on that same token of wanting a solid setup, i dont wana go overboard with it. i should be able to make the best of both worlds on this though...

What is your reasoning for wanting a 2nd batter? if it's just for that compressor you're much better off just running some 4 guage back and tapping into that for your compressor. I'd recommend a distribution block for future upgrades. Having a battery just sitting back there with no charging means is downright rediculous.

who runs their auxiliary lights for long periods when the vehicle is off? Let's not forget that your battery is a storage device, the alternator does the work when you're running.
