I recently bought a 1988 4Runner with the 3.0L V-6.
Are there any recalls I should be aware of?
Should I contact a dealer with my VIN #.
It's Christmas. I can wish for a new short block can't I?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the recall was for trucks built from mid '90s on. I'd go ahead and check with your dealer (more than one dealer would be good). Give them your VIN # and have them check for any other recalls too. New block would be cool!

Here is the Toyota case line #(800)331-4331. One little tip when reading the letters in your vin# over the phone say Victor instead of "V", David instead of "D" etc. They will tell you if yours is part of the recall or if it has already been done by a PO they will tell you that too.

 

I just got my 4runner back from the dealer to do a head gasket replacement on the recall. My 4runner is a sr5 v6 1990. I actually had the recall notice that was a couple of years old. The envelope said "head Gasket recall for LATE 90 4runners and later"

Going off of that yours might not need it. However toyota may have sent out recall letters with your vehicles specific year printed on it.

Bottom line...Call the number to be sure.

I just called Toyota with the number that mt_goat provided. They said that the only recall on my Runner was for the AC expansion valve which the previous owners had already replaced. None for the head gasket. :cry:

The 88/89 V6 4Runners were not affected by this recall.

 

I guess you guys got good gaskets huh? Maybe they were the old asbestos style?

By the looks of this site.. it seems like you could get a recall on that head gasget (if it's bad)

My uncle had the recall done on his 88 p/u. The recall is for ALL 3.0 V6 (3VZ) motors.

Either that or our Toyota dealer is so stupid as to make that kind of mistake? Hmmmmm....

 

I dunno. I called Toyota Corporation themselves. Got the same response from 2 other dealers. They all told me that I didn't have the recall. I think only the 3VZ-E after mid 90s had the recall. Maybe your uncle went to a generous dealer. I dunno. Beats me. :confused:
