Ok I am basically a card carrying idiot. Driving on Snow/Ice in my 98' Runner. Jackass in front of me jams the brakes and I didn't want to slam into him so I meant to downshift to 2 or L and threw it into reverse (I felt like such a moron but I panicked). Engine automatically died. I was able to put it into park and start it up again. No problems or sounds coming from the transmission. I am sure the engine cutting out was a safety feature but I wanted to make sure I didn't foul up my rig. Hopefully I don't get banned from yotatech for my stupidity.

 

I did that once a long time ago in a Camry - I was still within the first few years of driving (that's my excuse )
Didn't have any problems that I know of.

 

Banned from yotatech??? No, not yet, we wanna kick you around and fire up the grills first!

All kidding aside, I had a friend shift into reverse with his muscle car and it threw the transmission out the back end of the car and part of the engine through the hood.

I think its awesome there is a safety feature like that in newer cars, as to whether anything is wrong, I don't know, but if the engine was designed to cut out, I am sure nothing else went wrong.

 

Thanks guys. I expected some flaming. My brain said two clicks up on the shifter instead of two clicks down.

 

In the future I would just trust to the antilock brakes. In a slick condition the sudden gear drop could cause the wheels to lock up until speed drops which when your sliding isn't going to be real quick.
