swapping chrome grille for black...help needed!!

ok so all the previous posts indicate that all 96-02 grilles for the 4runner are interchangeable. I have a black 2000 Limited, and desparately wanna get rid of my chrome front grille. What's my best bet as far as getting a body-matched black one? And where should I look for it? Any websites, etc.? Thank you guys in advance...

Might not be your best bet but I switched out my chrome grille to black on my '01 Tacoma a little while ago and I ordered it form the dealership along wiht matching corner lights since they have the strip around them and I wanted those in black too.

I have a 2000, swapped in a black grill from an 01-02. You'll need a bigger front Toyota emblem to go on your new black grill but it is all a straight bolt up (no bolts as you have those little clips ) New grill at the dealer is around $100 and expect to pay $40 for a single emblem. You can try Ebay too.

Good luck.

I was able to pop off my grille on my 4 runner and paint it flat black. 1)clean first with soap and water then mineral spirits-paint thinner 2)sand with about 120 grit sand paper 3)remove sanding residue by washing or using a tack rag or pressurized air 4)spray with your choice of quality paint..lightly...expect to do two or more coats and sand between each coat with finer sandpaper wet or dry 5)pop grille back in 6)stand back and go...OOOO AHHHHH!

Paint that puppy!

Another vote for painting it. Attached is a picture of my painted black gril and emblem. Remember, prep is key.

My bumper is next!

wow waskillywabbit -- the grill was only $100 from the dealer? Is this for a body-matched painted black, or just a flat black? Sort of like ABS material? If it's actually painted, then that's a bargain! I would have expected the dealership to charge like 250+...

A black 01-02 grill from the dealer. It comes already painted. Just take the old one off, clip the new one on. I actually paid like $98.64 for it.

WOW! painted huh?? great! I don't suppose you'd happen to have a part number on it? It's always safer to go to the dealership with a part number, because if not, each one will tell you something different. Also, would you happen to have any pics of your black grill without the brush guard on??

It is a black 01-02 front grill, only difference is the bigger Toyota symbol on it.

From another thread w/ Q's about a grill:

The body-matched grills are from an 01 or 02 4runner. It's a direct swap to a 96-00. I have one in red. They come in chrome, red, black, green, silver, and pearl white. About $110 from your dealer locally and about $85-90 online. You'll also need a front Toyota oval for about another $40. The earlier ones won't fit on this grill.

You can't see mine for the lights in front of it, but here's one on Brian's 00 that he put on there when he was de-chroming it.

excellent! thank you guys for all the input. I think I'd rather buy one from the dealership for $100-$110 than buy one online for $85-$90 and pay a bunch more for shipping. I appreciate the suggestions though...gonna call the local dealerships today
