FIrst I have a 02 taco SC,7th in cooler plugs etc. I am running 91 -93 octane fuel now. I am considering running 87 and a octane booster. is anyone doing this out there? if so what octane booster and how much is the cost?
Also I am thinking is it cheaper to run 87 and a booster or is it cheaper to run 93 and forget about it? I found 93 for 2.36 a gal today at a amaco... normal price here is 2.48 now....

 

i would say that it's safer to run the higher octane than to run the lower octane with the booster. if it's not fully mixed before it gets to your injectors, then you might get some "spots" in the fuel where the octane is still the 87. with the higher octane, you know the fuel is uniform. my $.02

I agree, and many of those "octane booster" bottles have fine print. I suggest you read it. You will discover that it bumps the octane rating minimally and unpredictably. The true octane boosters are expensive and end up being as much as filling up with premium anyway.

 

"104 Octane Booster" doesn't necessarily boost your octane to 104. The label doesn't even tell you how high it boosts the octane.

Watch out for low quality gasoline also, the off brand kind. I put a tank in my Mustang with a forged block, Novi 2000, and boost cooler and it ran crappy for the tank.

Octane boosters are really a waste of money. Some say they boost 6 points or something, you may think that's 6 octane. That's .6 octane.

 

i have heard of using toluene the paint thinner to add a little bit to the tank and that increases octane..... not sure of the exact equation though, its very little, like only a couple ounces for a full tank of gas

Try PM-ing member WATRD. I remember reading a post of his stating that he uses Toluene to boost the octane rating.

 

toluene, acetone, xylene, etc.. all boost octane.

it's better and probally cheaper in the long run to just buy 93 or pull the SC and just regear like I am so you can save that extra $0.20/gal.

 

lets say you fill up 20gal, the difference in reg vs premium will be .20, for a total of $4. The octane boost bottle will cost more than that $4, AND will not give the same octane level and there are all the other issues listed above.....

does this make sense now?

btw, premium is 2.70 here in the bay area, so you're not so bad off!

 

sounds like too much trouble to maybe save a few cents. id go w/ the recommendation to just use 91 at the pump

Octane Boost is crap. 10 points= 1 octane. I work in an auto parts store. The best one we sell is the NOS octane boost, increases up to 10 points. Why pay $10 to get 88 octane gas? Octane boost is a scam. Just stick to 91-93 and you should be fine. Don't use Arco!!!
