to supercharge or not to supercharge!?

No not at all. i thought it might be this thread, but its not. Does have a fair amount of data on it. I think there was a similar thread back in the old days. not to mention CO TTORA was very vocal a few years back (may still be - I just quit going there). At the time the high elevation gang was very adamant about not needing mods.
Too bad I moved down to a lower elevation and started pinging immediately.
EDIT - old days meaning the old message board format.
Further edit: nope that wasn't it.

I'm the sole member of StockProjektz... I plan on keep my 4Runner forever, it's power is adequate for hauling mountain bikes and taking it off-road occasionally. The money it would take to ensure reliability from the supercharger seems well spent elsewhere. The handling sucks regardless of how much power the engine makes and going faster in a straight line isn't worth the money. I am sure the supercharger is reliability when installed correctly and with fuel mods, but there are plenty of them out there that are tuned correctly and are just basically a ticking timebomb. The TRD low boost solution I am sure will allow for maximum reliability, but then is a costly solution for minimal gain.

Strangely enough, I'm not so sure if I'm okay with low RPM ping. Perhaps I have one of those 6 sigma trucks that pings more than everyone else's (actually I've anecdotally verified that point). Living at 6k feet I would ping with the 2.2" pulley, not ping with stock. tells me I was riding the fine edge.

I'm okay with the theory that you won't ping at higher altitudes with JUST the SC, no fuel mods, stock pulley, not pulling heavy loads. I'm most definitely _NOT_ okay with ANY audible ping. That's just trouble waiting to happen.
