Stupid question about tire and rim sizes

A friend recently got new rims for his LC (96) and gave me his stock rims (16X8). I 99.99% sure that 31X10.5X15 tires won't fit (from a 15X7 rim), but just thought I'd ask. I already know the rims will fit on my 4Runner (94), but it sucks because I have no tires for them, and no money for tires at the moment

What is the closest size that I can get to 31X10.5X15 for those rims? I'm probably going to have to trade my current rims and tires (which are only 5 months old) for just a set of tires for the LC rims, so I need to know which size(s) to look for.

Thanks,
Daniel

31x10.5x15 will fit a 15x7 wheel.

Oops sorry I know that was all kind of jumbled together (this day needs to end!). The rims I have now are stock 15X7, but I'm moving up to 16X8. Sorry for the confusion.

A 265/70/16 would be about the same size

Sounds like you know the answer already. 15 inch tires gotta go on 15 inch rims, 16 on 16 etc... As for width, a 31x10,50 goes great on a 7 or 8 inch wide rim.

first off... take a few minutes to learn what the numbers mean in a tire size. The first number is either the height of the tire (31) in inches or the width (265) in millimeters. The second number is either the width (10.5) in inches or the aspect as a percentage (70), the last is the diameter of the wheel the tire will fit on (16).

So any tire that ends with 15 will only fit on a 15" wheel. Any tire that ends in 16 will only fit on a 16" wheel.

So, to answer your question, no - the 31/10.5-15s will not fit on the new rims. The new rims are 16" in diameter, and the tires will only fit a 15" rim. So you need to look at tires for a 16" rim... a 265/70-16 should be pretty close.

Jacksonpt,
Thanks I had no idea how to judge that. Obviously I'm used to the 31*10.5*15 instead of the 265*70*16 measurements. I figured I'd ask anyway because I know there are some people here who can "coax" just about anything to fit anything.

Slyang1012,
Thanks but my buddy gave me his LC rims.

I guess I'll post this question here as well as the classified section then...

If anyone in So. Cal wants a set of stock 2nd gen 4Runner rims with BFG M/T's (31*10.5*15), I need some BFG M/T tires in the size of 265/70-16. The tires are about 5 months old, and the rims have some curb rash. I'll get some pics up tomorrow or Sat. I'd need the tires before I gave up the rim/tire combo because otherwise I'd have no way to get the truck anywhere.
