Step 2: Tuning Timing....

Ok im 90% done tuning fuel and that will be done tonight to virtualy perfect....i want ot start working on tuning some timing but, id ont knwo where to start...i get little or no ping unless i try really hard...
I heard that there was potential in the upper RPM for advanced timing....just want to know...ive got a HP goal and want to try to get to it (260-270rwhp)...if a 95.5 taco can get 274 with stock pulley and everything else (Except for injectors and unichiP) also a trd cat back then im sure my 96 can do it as well!!

anyway thanks for any input

It's real easy Johnny! Go to the timing map, and experiment with putting positive numbers in the first two columns, no more than 3's and you'll need some retard about 1800-2300 depending on your truck in the 3rd and 4th columns, and then above that you can experiment with positive numbers again, but not more than 3's to be safe. Try it, and you should notice some quicker throttle response on the low end and more power up top, just be careful not to over do it.

If you're not pinging now, don't retard anywhere. But if you are, just retard one cell at a time only ine number at a time, and you'll wipe it out after a bunch of test. Just make sure you do the timing so it addresses all different ways you drive.

yea im gonna drop some there..i jsut want to know what is safe and where is safe....like how do i know when i should stop....also if i drop the max and lower limit to like -3 -> +3 so that i dont mistakenly hit 6 or something and blow the thing up.....will it stop the program form inputing a 6 or will it jus tnot put nanything higher then 3?

Once more thing...how much HP gain per increase? i heard 4-5 i also heard 7-10....thanks!

Don't know. The only real thing you could do to hurt it is too much advance. I have my limits set at -12 and 12. You'll never retard or advance that much anyway. I don't have a cluse how much power can be gained from each advance 1 degree of timing. The way you can tell if you've gone too far is if you here pinging. If not, advance one more degree and test it again.... and again... and again.

I was thinking about brinng up aorund max 3-4 in the upper end (one at a time) and maybe a bit in lower but dorp in that one bracket 2800-3200
will give you results

Most of your timing retard is going to occur in the top gear, when you slowly depress the gas pedal and it doesn't downshift. That's the only areas you need to retard. I't snot 2800-3200, but rather 1800-2300 range depending on your gearing. You'll see what I'm talking about!

opps yea i ment 1500-2200 for me...which i fixed...truck loves the -1 around that area no ping and it seems a little quicker when i am crusing and hit gas about 32% (just before downshift)....im going to bring it up 1-2 up top as i tried it and it pulled laot harder with 2's but i since brought it abck down to 0 sfor now....thanks

I got everything but the pump and ESC1 on today. I've been doing a tad bit of tuning, and it's running pretty good so far. More later!
