starter clicking but not starting

I helped a buddy of mine change his starter on a 1998 4 runner 3.4 auto a few weeks ago. the stater has been working fine until tonight. when he tried to start it i can hear the fuel pump starting but then there is just a loud click. the battery voltage is fine as well. has anyone had this problem or advice on what to look for?

thanks
brian

Check batt. cables and starter cables. If the voltage is good, it sounds like loose cable.

Loose cabling or its toast.

Me, I would get a nice pipe and give it a bang and see if it gets going if your stuck somewhere with it.

Used or reman starter? Or did you change the contacts?

Changing starter contacts is pretty easy...

And a single click from the starter = failed contacts. Or possibly bad main power wire.

try tapping the started hard with something metal (like a pipe) while someone turns the key..if that works, probably the contacts -you can get them cheap from Roger Brown

Mine did the same thing two years ago. My mechanic pulled it, cleaned it real well and rebuilt it and it has worked perfectly. I bought the rebuild kit but don't remember what I paid for it but it was cheap. He charged me $20.00 to for the whole deal...pull it , clean it, rebuild and re-install. Took him less than an hour.
