you NEED to extend MORE than just the differential breathers! There are 5 total breathers that have to be extended. I damn near lost my transmission from not doing this, by accidentally finding a hole where the water was about 20-24" deep. I got lucky and it only cost me about 150 bux to change everything out. Tranny rebuilds are 1400-1600 bux...

There are 2 breathers on the tranny, 1 on the transfer case, and 2 for the front and rear differentials.

But damn it, please please extend everything, avoid the crazy hell hole I ran into....

i pity da foo dat dont extend hiz breatherz! /

lol

You've got a 2nd gen. right? As I understand it, the front, transfer case & tranny are already extended on a 3rd gen., so we need only do the rear diff extension.

Can someone please confirm or deny this is true?

Al

My list:

1.) Sell the runner
2.) Buy an FJ40
3.) Buy an MR2

I doubt it will workout because I'm sooo picky about what I want and what I'm willing to spend.

Here's to hoping though \~/

That could definately be true - yes, I have a 2nd gen. I think im going to set up my yota so that'd I'd drown before it (or any of its parts) did...lol

But - I just dont want anyone to have to worry about where the next 1400-1600 will come from for a tranny rebuild....

If you have to extend all, I'd certainly agree w/you on that. I'm just not entirely sure if the 3rd gens are like that too or not. I suppose I could crawl under the 4Runner and check, but it's awfully slushy & muddy out lately, so I don't think so...

I'm sure somone on here knows anyway.

Hey Bumpin' Yota, Do you have any P/N for the fittings needed to extend the Tranny & Transfer breathers? I may as well order them while I'm at it.

I have to be the luckiest guy around to not have had any trouble w/ mine. I have had my tires & then some entirely under water crossing creeks to go Kayaking.

Thanks
Todd

'friad not. My local toyota dealer did not have any of the fittings only the breathers. Im hoping that they are the same thread pattern as the differential breathers.

I replaced the front breather last night and when your engine is hot from a 35 mile drive and you dont have 2nd degree burns on your hands - that is QUITE the accomplishment! btw - what IDIOT at toyota designed the oil pan to cover the breather for the sole intention of burning fingers? lol

I found the breather on the transfercase and it feels just the same as those on the differentials. I have not located the 2 on the tranny yet - my truck was too hot to be sticking my whole arm up in there near my exhaust pipe....lol

It was the same guy who designed the 2nd Gen exhaust.
