speedometer problem

hello. i hope someone here can help me out. a while back my speedometer started acting up. it would stop working intermitently untill one day it stoped completely. when that happened my check engine light started comming on. also , sometimes the over driver light flashes. its a 94 4runner 4x4 with the 3.0 v6. has about 200,000 miles on it. i live in california and it wont pass smog like this.

if any of you guys are mechanics near the san bernardino area i can take it in.

thanks

I have a problem with mine as well, but its nothing like Yota_driver's problem.

I have a 3rd Gen, with a stock suspention and stock wheels, so that eliminates that problem.

Heres what I get: from 10-40mph it will read accurately. After that its gets screwy on me. I did a tag-along with my friend and followed him @ 60mph, my speedometer was reading 80mph. Nothing else seems to be wrong. The motor runs just fine, and everything else that might contribute to the problem isnt showing any signs of problems. The RPM's are reading like they should.

I'm thinking it maybe the computer.

It hasnt really done this the last month or two, but every once and a while it happens. Kinda urks me... Anyone have any suggestions to this RARE issue?

The same thing happened to me and it turned out to be the speedometer it self. The dealer replaced it and no trouble now. Cost me $400. Others on here have had the same problem with the same repair.

I have a 93 with an electric speedometer, mine will jump all over the place some of the time or read 100 mph at about 45 mph actual speed, then periodically will not read at all. I am not sure if it is the speed pick up, a short or the speedo. Does anyone know how to check the speed pickup with a multimeter and possibly the wiring between it and the speedo?

Considering this is in the 95+ section and its 7 years old you might want to find another thread.
