I've replaced the fan clutch THREE times now. First 2 were aftermarket with lifetime warranties (junk). Then I finally wised up and got an OEM with a new fan blade. Truck still overheats at idle after about 5 minutes. Here's the background:

-1992 3.0 V6 x-cab truck, motor rebuilt about 20K ago, now at 159,000 miles
-Truck runs awesome with all new fluids and synthetic in tranny and dif's
-Radiator flushed and refilled, new hoses

Old fan clutch was leaking some fluid and bearing was bad, but still worked well. I decided to do some preventive maintenance and change it before the truck overheated, big mistake.

I replaced the fan clutch tonight with the OEM one and a new blade. Radiator and shroud are in great shape. I took the truck out for a drive tonight and I let it sit and idle several different times every couple of miles. Well after the third time, the truck started to overheat. So I popped the hood and the fan was turning but I couldn't really feel significant airflow. I'm fairly sure that it's the fan clutch because I can stop the fan with my bare hands after the car starts to overheat!

I don't really want an electric fan for the reliability issues. Am I doing something wrong! I've worked on cars my whole life, even other Yota's. I have never seen anything like this!

Any one got any suggestions or advice? Do I need to try a fourth fan clutch and keep my fingures crossed?

my vehicle never overheats since i replaced my thermostat with a dual stage one from toyota (its for the 22r though)

i can stop my fan while its idling without much effort with my bare hands... my fan works jsut fine.....

to me, if you replaced the fan, it sounds liek a thermostat or failed waterpump issue...

 

bump cause I need some serious help! Any advice anyone? If I can't figure this out, does anyone want a clean 1992 x-cab 4x4? I can send pics and details if ya want.
