Smoking Taillights?
Anybody here know how to give the taillights on a 95 4runner a nice like smoked effect? I've seen em on a 97 Black and they look sick. Just wondering if anybody knows how to do it.

Could this be a $20 mod??

I don't really know where to get it, I haven't ever set out to buy any. I've seen it around though, and I'm sure if you did an internet search you'd find it. I think they also sell it at Auto-Zone or equivelant. I imagine if you gave the taillight more of a light misting rather than total coverage, you'd still be able to see through it and give you the smoke effect you're looking for. Not sure though...

I remember I saw someone do it on a Volkswagen...I believe what they did was use a spray paint (it wasn't a specific tint kind or anything) on the inside of the cover, and it darkened them nicely! Looked very custom but low-key/factory. Good luck!

Why use a 4Runner taillight? Find a junkyard taillight with similar coloration and try it on that. Go to a yard and ask for the cheapest taillight they have...probably run you like 10 bucks or something....

How about some Night Shades. I've heard some pretty good stuff about it and will be using it to paint my reverse lights on my 95 4runner.

I think there're state (federal?) laws about the minimum amount of light that a taillight can throw.

Yeah that's the only reason I wouldn't use them on my taillights is having to worry about the legality of the paint. I don't care about my taillights because I have extra backup lights. I think if you just do a coat or two of the night shades you would be able to see the light fine with it still giving that smoke effect...I guess you just have to take it one coat at a time.

I think it depends on how picky the cops in your area are as to whether or not you'd have to worry about legality issues with that paint. I haven't heard of anyone getting pulled over for having taillight blackouts not producing enough light, and essentially, the paint is just like the blackouts. Sometimes law enforcement is lax, sometimes it's insanely strict, you just have to know your area.
