Smoked my alternator (literally)

Need to know where I stand, not too familiar with electrical.

- Hosed down engine bay with garden hose on a light mist.

- Waited 2 hours, engine looked dry.

- Drove out to a lake 30 minutes away.

- Battery light and e-brake light came on.

- Shut off truck, pop the hood, alternator starts smoking and burning.

- Truck runs fine, voltmeter shows about 10v as a reading, warning lights don't shut off.

Am I good to run the truck still, or will the alternator gradually decrease and eventually crap out on me? I'm going to buy a new one, I just want to know if I am okay to drive to and from work until this happens.

Time to mount that fire extinguisher now!

sounds like you did infact fry your alternator. the truck will still run on battery power, but there is nothing charging the battery so once it dies, the truck will leave you stranded.

That's what I was afraid the answer would be.

The alternator is only about 6 months old too
That's the last time I take a garden hose to my engine bay.

My old one died in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere in September.
I limped into the next city and got one from Napa as there was no Toyota dealership.

Just some generic POS apparently.

haha funny b/c i did that too and my bat. light and ebrake light would shut off if i hit the gas real hard to get the rpm's up fast but that was in the first 2 weeks of the problem. now they won't shut off so i had the atl. checked and it was dying fast so i replaced mine today when i had a few spare mins.
good luck,
alan

If it's only six months old, maybe you can exchange it under warranty?

If you alternator isn't charging your battery, you WILL get stranded sooner or later. Been there, done that, and it was no fun.
