I normally always use something like Permatex Disc Brake Quiet on the backs of the brake pads; however, I could swear someone told me that Toyota doesn't need it because one of the shim plates on the back of the pad is actually made to stop vibration.... anyone heard anything like this?

 

Yeah, it's called an anti-rattle spring.

But I think what you're talking about are the anti-squeal shims. There's 2 for each pad, an inner, and an outer.

Anywho, use it or don't use it. It's up to you, and/or whether or not it's "needed" to remedy a particular issue. Toyota doesn't recommend using it, if that's what you're looking for.

 

Yes I think its the anti-squeal shims like you said that I had heard about before, I just couldn't remember.

I have had a 4runner and tacoma in the past and did the 4runner with and tacoma without the compound, and I didn't notice a difference, but I hadn't kept the tacoma without long enough to see if it eventually did start squeaking. My new 4runner I have never done so I just wanted to avoid spending 10 dollars on some useless compound - THANKS
